Gen 1 (EA837) - 2009-2016

The first generation of the 3.0 TFSI supercharged engine features:

• Aluminum-silicon (Alusil) cylinder block without sleeves
• Direct fuel injection only
• Fixed supercharger pulley (non-clutched)
• Simos 8 ECU

• 2010-2012 B8 S4, S5 (all markets)
• 2013-2016 B8.5 S4, S5 (North America)
• 2013 B8.5 S4, S5 (Europe/Rest of World)
• 2009-2015 C7 A6, A7, A8
• 2010-2015 Q5, Q7

Gen 2 (EA837 EVO) - 2014-2020

The updated generation was designed to meet stricter emissions standards and includes:

• Cast iron cylinder sleeves (1mm thin-wall press-fit)
• Combined fuel injection (both port and direct injection)
• Electromagnetic clutched supercharger that disengages during idle and cruising
• Simos 16 ECU
• Revised timing chain design and graphite-coated pistons

• 2016-2018 C7.5 A6, A7
• 2016-2018 D4 A8
• 2016-2020 Q7

How to Identify Your Engine Generation

The most reliable way to determine your engine generation is to check your engine code, which can be found on a sticker in your engine bay, in your owner's manual, or on your vehicle registration documents. Match your engine code to the lists above to identify whether you have Gen 1 or Gen 2.
